Alameda is a serious boating community with fifteen marinas and yacht clubs within 10.61 square miles.
Alameda is often referred to as the island off the coast of Oakland. But Alameda actually consists of four islands. “The Main Island was created by the Oakland Inner Harbor Tidal Canal and built by the Army Corps of Engineers; the development of that canal also created Coast Guard Island, which is in Alameda proper. Then there’s Bay Farm, and also, Ballena Bay (it is indeed an island),” according to Historian, Michael Lano, Alameda Historical Society.
During the 2013 America’s Cup races on San Francisco Bay, both Artemis Racing and Team Luna Rossa set up HQ in Alameda.
